How do we collect data?
Students are trained in the classroom, given the tools to conduct an effective interview, and then bring the data back to class. The data is then crafted into a testimonial through an editorial process, and submitting to the instructor. The testimonial is then edited for maximum effectiveness.
What are testimonials?
Testimonio is a popular Latin American literary type, which recounts political and personal histories of socially relevant events. The witness or protagonist offers her testimonial to a researcher in order to counter popularly accepted views of history and culture. In doing so, the witness is participating in a political act. Testimonials have been praised and criticized because of the use of dramatic literary devices within the narrative. Those who accept testimonio as legitimate celebrate its power to bring new evidence to highly debated historical events and subjects; those who critique it have stated that its narrative invites inacuracy to the scientific approach of historical research. We believe that testimonios can help us gain a community approach to the history and culture of ethnic communities in America.
What do we do with raw data?
Raw data is save either in a question/response interview format or on tape/video. That information will be available for those who prefer traditional oral history data.
